    Assess if it is possible for you to change the situations which are causing stress, maybe by taking on less responsibility, relaxing standards, or asking for help. Instead of getting stressed about a lot of things in your life, focus on what you can control, like how you choose to respond to problems. It is not always possible to avoid a stressful situation or to avoid the problems, but you can work to lessen the amount of stress you are feeling. In the meantime, there are things you can learn to handle the stress you are feeling before it gets to be too much.

Even intense stress caused by serious illnesses, losing your job, death in your family, or painful life events can be a natural part of life.

    Because people react to stressful circumstances differently, a situation one person may find bearable may be the source of chronic stress for another. When the stressor is negative and cannot be countered or avoided–such as being laid off from a job or experiencing a loved ones health crisis–or the stressors experiences become chronic, our biological responses to stress may harm our mental and physical health.
